Garden Variety, the Van Pelt, Kerosene 454 at Brownies
NYC Ave A and 11th street.
April 28, 1996

Kerosene 454 were playing when we arrived, they sounded fine at times, but slower than I would like to hear in my perfect universe (in fact I could say this of all the bands on the bill, OK OK I know it makes me an old punk rocker). Brownies was not very crowded, but like at a little league game, at any given time half the crowd was on its way in or out. We took a walk around during the Van Pelt, who seemed to have trouble generating energy or focus. I think of Garden Variety as a one dish meal, satisfying, with small, polished complexities, more like all-1-god soap, than a medicine cabinet of mutilayered realities, all screaming for attention.
